Epicurus
Born in 341 BCE, Epicurus would later become famous for his Epicurean philosophy, which is often paired with Stoicism. Epicurus wrote on several philosophies including his beliefs on sensation, pleasure, afterlife, and happiness. He believed that the happiest life involved more concentration on simple pleasures like friendship or discussion, rather than indulging in the physical pleasures such as gluttony or sex. Epicurus also believed that there was no afterlife, and that after death, both body and soul would disintegrate into atoms and disperse into the universe. From this, he reasoned that there should be no fear of dying and punishment in the afterlife, and therefore life should be focused on happiness.
